In Italy, the "L'Oréal Italia Per le Donne e la Scienza" program is now in its 22nd year. It grants six prizes, each worth 20,000 euros. To date, 112 prizes have been awarded to female scientists.
In October 2002, L'Oréal Italia - in collaboration with the Italian National Commission for UNESCO - established the "L'Oréal Italia Per le Donne e la Scienza" (L'Oréal Italia for Women and Science) prize to encourage the further training of young female researchers in Italy. The "L'Oréal Italia Per le Donne e la Scienza" program will grant six prizes of 20,000 euros each to female researchers under 35 years of age who have enrolled in at least the final year of a doctoral program, either in Italy or abroad, in the following scientific-disciplinary areas: Life Sciences; Environmental Sciences; Mathematics; Computer and Information Science; Physics; Chemistry; Engineering and Technologies. The Jury, chaired also in this edition by Lucia Votano (Director of Research Emeritus National Institute of Nuclear Physics), will select the six winners among the applications received. The Jury is composed of Enrico Alleva (Reference Centre for Behavioural Sciences and Mental Health SCIC, Istituto Superiore di Sanità.
