In Italy, the "L'Oréal Italia Per le Donne e la Scienza" program is now in its 22nd year. It grants six prizes, each worth 20,000 euros. To date, 112 prizes have been awarded to female scientists.

In October 2002, L'Oréal Italia - in collaboration with the Italian National Commission for UNESCO - established the "L'Oréal Italia Per le Donne e la Scienza" (L'Oréal Italia for Women and Science) prize to encourage the further training of young female researchers in Italy. The "L'Oréal Italia Per le Donne e la Scienza" program will grant six prizes of 20,000 euros each to female researchers under 35 years of age who have enrolled in at least the final year of a doctoral program, either in Italy or abroad, in the following scientific-disciplinary areas: Life Sciences; Environmental Sciences; Mathematics; Computer and Information Science; Physics; Chemistry; Engineering and Technologies. The Jury, chaired also in this edition by Lucia Votano (Director of Research Emeritus National Institute of Nuclear Physics), will select the six winners among the applications received. The Jury is composed of Enrico Alleva (Reference Centre for Behavioural Sciences and Mental Health SCIC, Istituto Superiore di Sanità. Corresponding Member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei); Mauro Anselmino (Former Professor of Theoretical Physics, University of Turin, and National Member of the Academy of Sciences of Turin); Maria Benedetta Donati (Head of the Neuromed Biobanking Centre, Department of Epidemiology and Prevention, IRCCS NEUROMED of Pozzilli-IS); Salvatore Magazù (Full Professor of Experimental Physics at the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, Physical Sciences and Earth Sciences (MIFT), University of Messina); Maria Rescigno (Full Professor of General Pathology and Deputy Rector with responsibility to research at Humanitas University. Group Leader of the Unit of Mucosal Immunology and Microbiota - Humanitas Research Hospital); Luisa Mannina (Full Professor of Food Chemistry, Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technologies, Sapienza University of Rome); Anna Loy (Full Professor of Zoology at the Department of Biosciences and Territory of the University of Molise); Giulia Casorati (Head of Experimental Immunology Unit, San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Milan); Fosca Giannotti (Professor of Computer Science at Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, and Associate at the Information Science and Technology Institute “A. Faedo” of CNR, Pisa).
